New gTLDs for Catering and Culinary: 2019 in review

We, French, like Food...and actually, this report is one of the first that came to my mind in 2016 when I started to publish weekly (then monthly) domain name registration volumes from specific industries. There were three applicants for the .FOOD new gTLD and one only for the similar IDN Top-Level Domain (.食品) which makes that string exist in two versions: English and Japanese. The funny thing about this example is that the Japanese version (belonging to AMAZON) has more domain names created - 58 in total - than the ASCII version which had one only in December 2019. It stuck to one since it was delegated in November 2016.
I compiled a list of 23 Top-Level Domains and noticed a few things for catering and culinary new gTLDs in 2019:
  • There is another IDN for the .RESTAURANT Top-Level Domain. It is its Chinese version, the .餐厅 new gTLD. If the ASCII version had a total of 8,000 domain names in December, the Chinese version had 70 (but it is increasing).
  • There were seven .BRANDs new gTLDs and three were withdrawn before 2019. One .BRAND is active, it is .FAGE which has created 61 personalized domain names in total but none were created in 2019 (it stuck to 61 from January to December).
  • The three withdrawn applications were .PAMPEREDCHEF and surprisingly, the two other were from McDonalds: .MCD and .MCDONALDS. I wonder how long it will take McDonalds to submit an application again :-)
  • Two ASCII TLDs exist in two languages: French and English: the .COFFEE (19,521 registrations) and .CAFE (15,959) new gTLDs.
  • The two surprises of the year are .BAR and .REST: both had more than 20,000 domain name creations in December. The two of them gained an important number of creations in the end of 2019: +12,000 for .BAR in November and +16,000 for .REST in December. Interesting, isn't it? Note that I am not sure about .REST and still wonder if it means "restaurant". It is possible that I remove it from this report in the future.
  • I personally like the .EAT new gTLD which is operated by Google but for some reason, nothing happens with it and it sticks to two domain name creations. I can't wait to see what's Google plan for this one.
  • The other TLDs listed here do progress slowly, very slowly in volume.

New gTLDs for the Finance: 2019 in Review

There are domain name extensions (not "domain names") for the financial industry: I call them "Financial new gTLDs". These are operated by their respective Registry: for example, the ".FUND" new gTLD is also called a "the dotFund Registry" and it is the sole legal entity allowed to create domain names ending in ".fund" (instead of ".com") for accredited Registrars to sell them to the public. In 2019, I took snapshots of these registries' evolution at the end of each month and wrote down the numbers.

The 2019 tab from my report shows a lot of "red" (it means that domain name registration figures decrease) but this is because red is noticed first. Financial new gTLDs have lots of Trademarks as clients and many Banks are listed. For this reason, this report is one of the longest from my 20 monthly reports. This is what I noticed on a list of 87 financial new gTLDs:
  1. I listed 51 dotBrand (".BRAND") new gTLDs:
    1. the .DVAG new gTLD ended the year with more than 2,000 domain names registered!
    2. Eight of these .BRANDs have more than 100 domain names created, this is a lot for a personal use!
    3. Two have between 500 and 1,000 domains created:
      1. .ALLFINANZ
      2. .CREDITUNION
    4. Five have between 100 and 500 domains created.
    5. Eighteen have between 10 and 100.
    6. Twelve did not register any new domain name since January 2019 and still have one registered.
    7. The .EVERBANK new gTLD was withdrawn during the year. Note that some other financial new gTLDs were withdrawn but they still appear as "Delegated" on the official ICANN website (the .NADEX new gTLD for example).
    8. One is an IDN new gTLD: .工行 (xn--estv75g).
    9. Some dotBrands did not register more domain names in 2019:
      1. .DISCOVER with 101 domain name created
      2. .SHRIRAM (28)
      3. .BARCLAYCARD (24)
      4. .AMERICANEXPRESS (8)
      5. .NETBANK (5)
      6. .COMMBANK (4)
      7. .CITI (4)
      8. .HDFCBANK (2)
      9. The TLDs with one single registration are not added here.
    10. Two were withdrawn long ago: the .CASHBACKBONUS and .JPMORGANCHASE
  2. Four new gTLDs exist in their singular AND plural version (but I think I already wrote that in the past):
    1. .ACCOUNTANT and .ACCOUNTANTS
    2. .LOAN and .LOANS
    3. .MARKET and .MARKETS
    4. .DEAL and .DEALS
  3. Only 10 generic new gTLDs have more than 10,000 domain name registrations and number one on that list has just above 27,000.
  4. Two have "unbelievable" numbers to read:
    1. the .BID new gTLD had 209,700 registrations in January. It ends the year with less than 28,000.
    2. the .LOAN new gTLD had... 2,806,800 (yes: two million) in January. It ends the year with a little more than 24,000.
  5. Only one generic Top-Level Domain maintained its registration level from January to December: the .TAX new gTLD which ended the year with 7,450 registrations. Oh... The .TRUST new gTLD registered one more domain name during the year and went from 51 to 52 registrations.

City new gTLDs: 2019 in Review

I believe that every business should acquire its name in the city where it resides (when the TLD exists) and setup a page just for this: it makes sense to provide that information to the public and let it be indexed; but it also benefits the Search Engine Optimization of the business's existing front page. A link back is always good (as long as it is not copy-paste content). Also, for a company which business is purely local, such domain name extension will always offer more precision than a ".com"...for obvious reasons.

Have City Name extensions been a success in 2019?
On my list of 45 domain name extensions, to which I included 2 generic TLDs which are not city names, here is what I noticed in 2019:
  • The 2 generic domain names I included to my list are .TOWN and .CITY : they are no city names but I considered that they should be included in my list:
    • The .CITY new gTLD stagnated from January 2019 and even lost a few registrations in December: it ended the year with 30,962 domain names registered in total.
    • The .TOWN new gTLD gained registrations but and ended the year with 4,194 domain names.
  • .TOURS and .SPA which are not City Names were included too because they represent two famous cities. The .SPA new gTLD has no registrations yet since it was delegated recently and .TOURS gained a small 800 registrations from January to December: not because the French city of Tours attracted Registrants but because "tours" has another meaning in English.
  • The .TOKYO is the only extension to have more than 100,000 domain names created. Its follower, the .NYC new gTLD ends the year with 67,220 domain names.
  • 16 extensions have more than 10,000 domain names created. The last one of them on the list is .COLOGNE which ends the year with 10,432 domain names. The first one is .TOKYO.
  • Just 3 extensions kept gaining registrations one month after the other but such numbers are not significant since they are below 2,500. The cities concerned are (in the order):
    • The .MADRID new gTLD which ends the year with 2,156 domain names;
    • The .KYOTO ends the year with 898;
    • The .STOCKHOLM ends with 80 domains.
  • Some extensions kept loosing registrations from January:
    • .AMSTERDAM (26,385 creations in December);
    • .VEGAS (15,092);
    • .YOKOHAMA (4,412).
  • 5 extensions had no registrations from January to December:
    • .DUBAI stick to 5 domain names;
    • .BCN - .HELSINKY - .BUDAPEST and .DOHA (still listed as "Delegated") stick to one single domain name registration.
  • Some extensions have a twin sister:
    • Barcelona has .BARCELONA and .BCN
    • Moscow has .MOSCOW and its IDN, the .МОСКВА new gTLD;
    • Cologne has .COLOGNE and .KOELN
    • Istanbul has .ISTANBUL and .IST
  • 11 extensions are below the 1,000 domain name registrations. The first one of them is the .RIO new gTLD with 910 domain names created.

Singular vs Plural new gTLDs: 2019 in Review

When the ICANN new gTLD program launched, no one would have expected that multiple extensions would exist in their singular AND plural version. Well they exist and there are 22 of them.
Note that .MOTO (a .BRAND) is not the plural of .MOTORCYCLES but it could look like and the same applies to .NEW and .NEWS Top-Level Domains.

This is my review of these extensions - in terms of volumes of domain names created - by their respective registries.

So : "S" or no "S" ?
My answer really refers to no specific logic but just a reading of the figures and I don't find them attractive, it's clearly a "no" to me:
  1. Almost no Singular and Plural new gTLDs have more registrations in December 2019 than in...January 2019. On my list of 22 twins, only 16 out of 45 (.HOTEL had 3 "plurals) had more registrations after 12 months. The TLDs concerned are:
    1. .AUTOS
    2. .CAREER
    3. COUPONS
    4. .DEALS
    5. .FAN
    6. .GAME and .GAMES
    7. .MARKETS
    8. .MOTORCYCLES
    9. .NEW (by Google)
    10. .PHOTO and .PHOTOS
    11. .SUPPLY
    12. .WATCH
    13. .WORK and .WORKS
  2. Some TLDs from ex Famous Four Media (now GRS Domains) lost (a lot of) registrations:
    1. The .ACCOUNTANT new gTLD lost 52,000 registrations in one single year;
    2. The .LOAN new gTLD lost (...) 2,182,000 registrations in one single year;
    3. The .REVIEW new gTLD lost 132,000 registrations in one single year.
  3. Only 5 TLDs lost no domain names from a month to the other during the entire period. The TLDs concerned are:
    1. .FAN (belonging to Multiple Registry Donuts Inc.) ended the year with 3,411 domain names;
    2. .GAMES (belonging to Multiple Registry Donuts Inc.) ended the year with 20,149 domain names;
    3. .MOTORCYCLES (belonging to Multiple Registry Dominion) ended the year with 214 domain names;
    4. .NEW ended the year with...262 domain names created;
    5. .WORKS (belonging to Multiple Registry Donuts Inc.) ended the year with 20,956 domain names created.
  4. 6 extensions still have one single domain name registration.

Dropped new domains: learn why it matters

"Dropped domains" do not necessarily mean something to traditional Registrants (those who buy domain names) but law firms should pay attention to this subject for one simple reason: once a domain was dropped and collected on a list (the Registry below offers this service), it is "more" at risk from being registered by a third party. If you are in charge of managing a domain name portfolio and don't understand what I just wrote, 2 options:

The era of propaganda (new gTLDs)

I just read the article below from Verisign and...no sign of new gTLDs in the article but I don't blame the author: business is business.
Since Verisign is the owner of the profitable .COM Registry, I understand that kind of promotion but what I misunderstand is the reference to SEO when Google announced that it makes no difference to use a new domain name or a ".com".
There is a reference to the frustrating technical experience with new gTLDs too: come on what are talking about here? Same for the "level of security" paragraph ending in: "It may be more prudent to stick with well-known and trusted domain name extensions until more of the new gTLDs are able to prove themselves as safe and reliable": what? (...) I am fine with auto-promotion and I understand Verisign's willing to do the promotion of ".com" at all costs but is it what I read here or is this propaganda?

My advice
  • Buy a new domain name (ie: ending in ".club" - ".gdn" - ".consulting" - ".finance"...) which means something and according to the identity of your online content. New gTLDs offer that possibility, ".com" domains don't.
  • Buy a ".com" domain name because there is a risk to have it cybersquatted.
  • When your baker says is bread is the best on earth, he's lying ;-)

Impressive results of the .GDN Registry

I read many times that a high domain name registration volume is not a key to the success of a new gTLD. Well, I disagree: offering new domain names at a low price is a development strategy like another: it is an communication investment that pays. The .CLUB Registry has demonstrated that already with a strong investment budget in communication and a fair price for its domain name. The result now is that, not only it has become the reference for Clubs but clubs of all kinds...have turned to buying these domain names.

What about the .GDN Registry?
The strategy for the .GDN new gTLD seems to be a little different since there are still few Registrars to be accredited yet (with more coming little by little). This week, we noticed a change in registration volumes from the Registry with an important increase. Last week (on week 23), there were 29,259 domain names registered. This is not so bad for a Registry which launched with few Registrars accredited. This week (week 24), there are 65,795 domains registered.
Reminder about ".GDN" : it stands for "Global Domain Name", it is ultra cheap, it is a short Top-Level Domain with 3 letters and comes in direct competition with ".com" offering many free domains to register.

Can ".mail" new gTLD cohabit with ".email"?

Last week, I referred to Singular and Plural versions of domain names but the same could be applied to multilingual versions of new gTLDs (".vin" and ".wine" for example) or similar new gTLDs such as ".bing" and ".bingo" or ".cal" and ".call".
If I strongly believe that multilingual Top-Level Domains are a good fallout of the ICANN new gTLD program, I think that allowing singular AND plural versions of the same extension is already causing confusion and will cause much more in the future.
The same applies to similar TLDs: I just checked the status of the .MAIL new gTLD which is "on-hold". This means that it could possibly go live someday and have to cohabit with the ".email" (live TLD already).
Generally speaking, very few people worry about this today because the existing generation is starting to use new domain names. But what about in a few years? Will third parties want to use a ".email" domain name with such a high risk of confusion if ".mail" has gone live too? I doubt it. I even think that allowing ".mail" to go live is a risk for ".email" to be a success.

The new gTLD info for Tuesday, May 24th

Today, I noticed interesting moves withing the financial industry (from a "new gTLD" point of view). In our new gTLD report related to FINANCE, we do not list generic Top-Level Domains only, we also list ".brand" new gTLD applicant domain name registration volumes. It means that some Trademarks applied for their own domain name extension: we also call them ".BRANDs" or "dotbrands". In our report, we have listed them with a little "®" sign so they are easy to identify.
In this week's report (see week 21):
  1. The .BLOOMBERG new gTLD has now 120 new domain name registrations (73 last week);
  2. The .FOREX has 84 (54 the two previous weeks before);
  3. The .PICTET has 76 (29 the previous week);
  4. The .CFA has now 52 (only 4 last week);
  5. The .NADEX has 51 (only 2 last week).
When a ".brand" new gTLD starts to register so many domain names, it is often the sign that the strategy is finalized and the Trademark really starts to deploy its domain names.

The new gTLD info for Monday, May 23rd

This week-end, I was asked the authorization to post in the new gTLD group I moderate on LinkedIn. I received a kind email asking for permission (...) and this is not the first time that it happens.

Don't ask for permission: just do it

I personally never read group rules prior to posting in a LinkedIn group but I don't post content when it is not related to the group I subscribed to. In regard to the "new gTLD" group, I never block from posting: it is already hard enough to have people to participate! I only block bad domaining and content which is not related to new gTLDs so please, feel free to post: there are 2300 subscribers waiting for your new gTLD info.

The new gTLD info for Tuesday, May 17th

Today the info is the Canon .BRAND new gTLD which is introducing a new URL for Canon’s global site: global.canon. When I read this, I tell myself: "finally, here we are" since Canon was the first Trademark to reveal its .BRAND new gTLD project in 2010. By he way, did you know that there is a .GLOBAL new gTLD too? When doing such an announcement, better check for your Trademark in the extension of your second level domain. Please, don't have a look at canon.global. Did you know that there is a .NIKON new gTLD too?
Another information: the .GDN new gTLD has more French Accredited Registrar to join soon: check the growing list here.

The new gTLD info for Thursday, May 12th

I surfed a bit this morning and went through the major Trademarks who registered their ".gdn" domain name. There are many already:
  1. Facebook
  2. Instagram
  3. Mark Monitor
  4. Periscope
  5. Twitter
  6. Wordpress
  7. Microsoft
  8. Oculus Rift
  9. Amazon
  10. Citibank
  11. ...
Some of them does not appear in that list. Did you notice which? To my understanding, this is one of the reasons why major Trademarks should pay attention to this domain name extension. Domain names ending in ".gdn" are for investors, not Trademarks, but this does not mean that it should be neglected.
