First round is now closed, what's next?
The "first round" to submit an application to ICANN is now officially closed. It will probably be expected to wait for years before it is possible to submit an application again.

TLD Application System (TAS)
TAS is the Top-Level domain Application System in which applicants submit their TLD application(s). The system is still temporarily offline and it is unknown when it will work again.
ICANN set up FAQs to explain the reason of this and you will also find applicants comments about this situation.

New gTLDs first round is now closed
New comers looking forward to submitting a new gTLD application will now have to wait for the second round. As of 25 March there were 839 registered users in the TLD Application System (TAS) and this number will be updated.
When THE SECOND ROUND going to be is the question on every mouth at the moment. The Applicant Guidebook says: "The goal is for the next application round to begin within one year of the close of the application submission period for the initial round".
The Applicant guidebook also says it can take up to 20 months for an application to be validated by ICANN.

Apply NOW for your Top-Level Domain(s)
TAS is the name of the Top-Level Domain Application System User Registration. To apply for your domain name extension, you will need to submit your entire application through this tool and pay the fees.
Not ready?
Well...you still have 3 months to prepare and find:
- "Money" and a good bank account;
- A back end registry provider for your technical operations;
- Lawyer(s);
- A service provider unless you operate your entire TLD yourself;
- A service provider for your communication: PR and marketing (unless you want to do it yourself);
- A DNS service provider unless you have your own network but I doubt it;
- "Sellers" or Registrars unless you do not plan to sell domain names;
- An external validation agent;
- An escrow provider because ICANN wants to;
- Someone able to manage auctions if part of your plans are to auction domain names.
