100,000 registrations = CHAMPAGNE !

Just in case no one noticed, the .CLUB registry is the first new Registry to have reached the 100,000 registrations without giving any.

There were 4 articles written today about .CLUB:

New Registries impressive strategies

Memories
  • Who could have imagined there would be so many new gTLD applicants?
  • Who would have bet that one company would be rich enough to apply for more than 10 new domain name extensions at the price of $185,000 each?
  • Who would have expected an applicant to apply for…60, 100, 300 new Top-Level Domains?
In 2010 very few would have expected that the ICANN new gTLD program would launch this way, many were talking about serious innovation in the domain name space but I don’t remember any post or any article mentioning that one applicant could or would submit dozens of applications. Today, the result of this first round is very different from what we, users and members of the new gTLD community, expected.

There are 2 applications for .RUN

So while I was running in Paris, I wondered if there would be a TLD for runners like me…and guess what…there are 2 applications for .RUN and they are in contention:
  1. First one is from dot Run Limited (Famous Four Media);
  2. The other one is from Snow Park, LLC (Donuts).
There will be a .RUN Registry in the end and it will become possible to register domain names ending in .RUN (instead of .com :-). So what is the market for .RUN ? Do runners communicate on Internet? Do they need to communicate because they are runners? Is .RUN for runners only?

New gTLDs + Root Zone Management Categories = IANA

Overview and History of the IANA Functions

How the ICANN works is sometimes difficult to understand and the IANA plays a major role in how new gTLDs technically work.

If more people start to know what the ICANN is, very few have ever heard of what the IANA is.

For those interested in knowing more about how is IANA is linked to new gTLDs, I suggest to go down to page 12 of this report and read "3.1 Root Zone Management Categories".

Google Domains: I want more for new gTLDs

The Buzz seems to be about Google Domains at the moment: Google is launching as a Registrar and will soon offer plenty of fantastic things to do with domain names. But…is there anything new with Google Domains?

I checked the features but…I found nothing that other Registrars do not already offer and I admit I expected to be a little more impressed.

So: what is missing?

Strange question received this morning about LinkedIn (new gTLDs goup)

This morning I was asked about the reason why I hardly ever publish links about certain people's article in the New generic Top-Level Domains (new gTLDs) group on LinkedIn ?

Just to point it out, every single link is sent to roughly 1,600 subscribers every day and those links added to the "Manager's choice" appear on top of each email sent to its members.

My answer: I don't make choices, I just select the information I am interested in. The funny thing about this question is that just a few people know that they can post links to their articles themselves...

It is just as easy as:

  1. Join the group;
  2. Paste the hyperlink to your article in the object field;
  3. LinkedIn then captures the link (nothing to do there);
  4. Add your Title in replacement of the hyperlink;
  5. Click on "share".
It is as simple as this.
