It's the end of the .YEAR & predictions

It is the end of the year and, as a new gTLD fan, promoter and evangelist, I will keep updating my new gTLD reports on a monthly basis starting 2017. Now most of the new gTLDs have launched, registration volumes will probably be constants...more or less.

I am enthusiastic about new gTLDs but studying registration volumes on a daily basis taught me a lot about what to submit an application for in round two of the ICANN new gTLD program and what NOT TO submit an application for.

For those interested in submitting an application in future rounds of the ICANN new gTLD program, I strongly recommend to check registration volumes from round 1: each category of TLD expresses a need for new domain name extensions...or not. For example, I would not invest in an application related to Real Estate anymore. I think sport applications are of great value as well as applications for cities. I also think that a lot of niche applications will be highly valuable and have a lot of potential.

My predictions for 2017
I predict that a date to submit a .BRAND new gTLD application will be announced before mid 2018, possibly earlier. The reason for this is that nothing blocks ICANN from allowing new "specification 13" applications from being submitted today and there is a strong demand for this. I am also confident that there will be more .BRAND new gTLD applications in coming rounds. I also think that it will cost less to apply...and.. that there will be more service providers to offer to submit a .BRAND new gTLD application. There are already a lot of signs about this: there are more tools available, it reduces the number of service providers to sign a contract with, and there is more money to earn by offering such a service to an existing list of clients: I heard about a law firm who's already understood this.

Confusing new gTLDs

Choosing the right domain name is like choosing a Trademark, it has to be taken seriously because it is a long time image investment.

If new gTLDs have brought new options to those in charge of creating a name (precision, availability, novelty) and registering its(their) domain name(s), they also brought the possibility to make a terrible mistake when choosing the right extension for a domain name.

First, I'd suggest to take a look at the list of "Singular versus Plural new gTLDs" and wonder:
  1. What if I someone else buys (and starts to use) my exact same domain name in its plural version?
  2. If I buy both domain names (one to use and one to redirect): what will be the trend in 5 years? Am I sure that I am making the right choice to use the plural version of the extension or should I use the singular one?
Second - and this one takes time - I'd suggest to carefully check the complete list of new gTLD applications by alphabetical order.

The same applies for Trademarks who will start to, or have started to, use their .BRAND new gTLD. Some strings can be the same with just one letter added. What happens if someone sends an email to Aigo Digital Technology Co,Ltd. (.AIGO new gTLD) and forgets the last "O"? The email could just never be received, because it was sent to a complete different company: American International Group, Inc. (owner of the .AIG new gTLD).

This is my list of confusing new gTLDs:
  1. .AIG & .AIGO
  2. .ART & .ARTE
  3. .AUDI & .AUDIBLE - .AUDI & .AUDIO
  4. Many more to come...
The complete list was first published on CircleId and will be maintained at Jovenet Consulting.

The .WHOSWHO new gTLD becomes a .BRAND ?

The end of the year is often the right moment to speculate about the future of new gTLDs and I much appreciate to read posts such as the recent one written by Stuart Fuller from Netnames. Something that I just feel like learning is this sentence about the .WHOSWHO new gTLD turning in to a brand new gTLD?
"Two examples of this in the past few weeks are the decision by the Whoswho registry to essentially turn itself into a dotBrand..."
I fast checked the application and saw no sign of this so I asked the registry for a confirmation. It is also possible that my English is too poor to correctly understand what "essentially" means in the sentence.

Whatever the decision of the registry is - I was aware of decisions from .BRAND extensions to turn to generic applications dedicated to selling domain names but I was not aware of the opposite - it can make sense to block from buying domain names to rent a service instead...based on a domain name. This is another way to deploy a TLD. Then it is a question of marketing it. Creating innovative projects based on new gTLDs is also something that we offer at Jovenet Consulting.

New gTLDs...since last Tuesday

COMING ARTICLES
I am working on two articles based on "facts" and I should post them soon. Your participation is welcome and I am happy if you drop me a line with your participation. The articles will probably be entitled:
  1. "Confusing new gTLDs";
  2. New business model for Round 2 (a new business model for Round two of the ICANN new gTLD program).
NEW gTLD PROJECT
I developed a project which innovation is based on a new domain name extension. It focuses on:
  • Generating income and creating new sources of revenues;
  • Establishing a worldwide "mega" brand;
  • Giving worldwide visibility to  project owner;
  • Bringing strong innovation to the Internet.
Since I cannot finance such a project, I am happy to talk to interested parties. Note that the project can be adapted to an existing - but not yet developed - new gTLD. I'd love to talk to Amazon, to Google, to Automattic, to Facebook, Vistaprint...

MILESTONE
The new gTLD group on LinkedIn has passed the 2,500 subscribers. As usual, you are welcome to post your news to the group as long as they are related to new gTLDs. We also send an announcement on Monday to subscribers so if you want to be read...this is the place have you content posted.

The .AUDI new gTLD
The AUDI Trademark creates more ".audi" domain names (see figures here). The registry has now up to 552 registrations and these start to be indexed in Google. There is an interesting https://gofor2025.audi/ that has been indexed recently. More to come?

.GDN : removed
The Top-Level Domain was removed from the Generic new gTLD report since the mission/purpose of the application still states: "Our mission is to commence a new generic top level domain name avenue for global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) industry and users, that enables and improve for commercial entities to illustrate, manage, market their products, services, education and experience, which enhance visibility and makes it easy for users to recognize GNSS activity on internet." What is written in the application is absolutely not what the front page of the registry says.

Trademarks more exposed starting January 2017

I force myself not to talk about the .SUCKS new gTLD because I strongly believe that it is the worst think that was brought by the ICANN new gTLD program. The latest announcement received from this registry - which front page states: "...is designed to help consumers find their voices and allow companies to find the value in criticism" - says that it will drop the wholesale price of .sucks domains to $1.99 in January.

What it means:
It means that the registry offers to buy a domain name for a cheap price starting January 2017 and it will then try to have buyers to renew the domain name at a much higher price at the moment to renew the domain name.
My suggestions:
  1. don't buy these domain names;
  2. don't participate in making the web worst than it already is;
  3. don't be fooled by such practice.
What does it mean for Trademarks and other Registrants:
During one year, starting in January 2017, your Trademark will be more exposed to infringements because of the low price of these domain names. Also, it will cost almost nothing to register yourname.sucks or yourtrademark.sucks for a third party.
My suggestions:
  1. don't pay attention if someone tries to annoy you because the price to renew these domain name will be higher so a squatter will probably not renew it;
  2. when paying attention to squatters, you increase their willing to renew a domain name;
  3. if you think this is going too far, have a look at the PDDRP Procedure at ICANN (Trademark Post-Delegation Dispute Resolution Procedure): "The Trademark PDDRP generally addresses a Registry Operator's complicity in trademark infringement on the first or second level of a New gTLD".
  4. don't participate in making the web worst than it already is...

The .AUDI starts to deploy

Last week, we were checking .TRADEMARKS registration volumes within the CAR industry and noticed that the AUDI had started to create many new domain names. This week seems to confirm last week's post since 63 new ".audi" domain names have been created and more websites start to be indexed in Google: http://www.audi-zentrum-stuttgart-feuerbach.audi/ was just indexed. Expect more website to be indexed soon.

It is still unclear how AUDI will use all these creations since there are domain name redirections in use too, but starting to use city names in ".audi" second level domains gives an idea of what comes next.

Congratulations to AUDI for the innovation. This is a good example of why it makes sense to develop a ".brand" new gTLD under specification 13 of the ICANN new gTLD program.

ICANN New gTLD Program update

This is the latest update on the ICANN new gTLD program and its reviews. The video is a little long so I suggest to start at 10:33. There are questions in the end. I apologize for not commenting but I often wonder who on earth has the time to watch a 1:33:44 hour video. Note that slides are interesting and full of information.

Important things from this video:
  • Reviews and PDPs are not going to be done before the 2017/2018 time frame: understand that no date for Round 2 of the ICANN new gTLD program will be given before 2018 (at least);
  • In terms of competition, new sales of second level domains (domain names) are splitting between legacy (".com" - ".net" - ."tel" -...), new gTLDs (".consulting" - ".tennis" - ".brand" -...) and ccTLDs (country code Top-Level Domains surch as ".fr" - ".us" - " .es" -...) to 1/3 each. New gTLDs are "taking their place".
  • Things are going "in the right direction" in terms of trust and competition;
  • Downside consequence of the program is the high cost for Trademark owners;
  • Interesting question asked (27:05), and which reflects the low capacity of ICANN to take decisions fast and act: "...you review is one of the most highly visible and there is quite a bit of expectations and it is important to manage expectations. You're not going to come up with conclusions but trends and directions: are you coming with recommendations?"
    Answer given: there will be conclusions but they will be substantive, more datas would be better... (translation: "we have no idea when this ends which makes it impossible to estimate when round 2 of the ICANN new gTLD program starts");
  • Potential 10,000 more brands are waiting to submit their new gTLD application.
For Internet users who pay interest to new gTLDs and other related questions, I recommend to watch this video.

As an Internet user
Participants to this meeting use surveys (public participation), which results represent the general thought from the entire 3.4 billion Internet users. The reality is that very few people participate in these surveys. Even I, as an ICANN NCUC member and promoter of the ICANN new gTLD program, I sometime don't know where to go to participate!
The ICANN -  which is a pretty rich not-for-profit organization - does not want to invest in communication to promote new gTLDs. Should't it then invest in a global communication to push internet users to participate in these surveys?

The real world
To understand the gap that does exist between ICANN and the real world, I suggest to go to 1:14:30 in the video.

Sunrise Period starts for .ART new gTLD

Announced yesterday, the .ART new gTLD Sunrise Period starts...today:
  • START: Wednesday, 7 December, 2016 - 16:00;
  • END: Tuesday, 7 February, 2017 - 16:00.

Interesting extract from the application:

It is difficult to anticipate the number of registrations in the restricted registry for .art, as the number may be determined by the effectiveness of marketing and the reception of internet users to the new gTLDs more generally. It is estimated that between 25,000 and 80,000 registrations may take place in the first year. It is difficult to estimate the number of people engaged at different levels within the visual arts community worldwide; however as a portion of the population, the number is likely to be significant and growing. In 2009 there were over 400,000 listed businesses engaging in the art market worldwide and between 5 and 15 million individuals engaging in arts related activities.

All City new gTLDs have launched

We are now done with all new gTLDs related to Cities.

38 cities in the world submitted one or more applications to own their name as a domain name extension:
  • Some applied for several TLDs such as .BCN and .BARCELONA for the city of Barcelona;
  • Some, like the city of Moscow applied for the same string in their ASCII and IDN version;
  • In certain cases, the TLD does not only represent the city itself but an entire municipality or an emirate like it is the case for Abu Dhabi;
  • Some strings were applied for the same name but in different languages like the city of Koeln (and Cologne).
  • We added .TOURS as a city since it also represents the city of Tours in France (even if the city of Tours has probably not noted its existence yet);
  • The last to have been added is the .BOSTON new gTLD which was delegated last week.
The complete list of cities can be checked here and we welcome new strings (since it is possible that we forgot some). The .SPA new gTLD maybe?

415 new .AUDI domain names?

AUDI
The AUDI Trademark just created an important number of domain names: 470 domain names ending in ".audi" have been created in one week. This is a lot for a .BRAND new gTLD.
I dug on google and found redirections to existing Audi websites and found two using ".audi" domain names:
  • http://www.audi-zentrum-dresden.audi/
  • https://award.audi/
I doubt creating so many new domain names is dedicated to tests so there must be a serious project to deploy these names at AUDI. Future will tell.

SHAPR
SHAPR uses ".email" domain names. SHAPR is a French mobile application to allow professionals to meet and network. It works a different way and goes straight to the point: "meet".
For the first time, I connected with someone yesterday and noticed that the internal email used by the application to connect registered users is a ".email" domain name. This is pretty unusual since the Universal Acceptance group at ICANN deals with this very specific problem and it is far from being solved at an international level. Some servers still reject emails using new domain names. Such risk taken by innovators demonstrates one thing though: new gTLDs are being more trusted.

What you missed in our previous Newsletter:
  1. Amen - 4 new gTLD were delegated: .католик - .كاثوليك - .天主教 - .CATHOLIC;
  2. The tables are turned: now Donuts can delay Verisign;

  5. Some article about new gTLDs & Universal Acceptance;
  6. Letter from the Red Cross ...asking for full protection of "redcross" and "redcrescent";
  7. Answer from the ICANN to the Red Cross request.
Domain name registration volumes:
  • New gTLDs related to CARS (HOT);
  • Generic new gTLDs;

ICANN new gTLD program: permanent protection?

This is a correspondence which was just published on the ICANN website between the Red Cross and the ICANN:

The ICRC to ICANN (translated by myself): "after five years of discussions, when can you confirm that "redcross" and "redcrescent" are fully protected at the first and second level (first and second level domain names)?

ICANN's answer:
"...the Board took a decision in 2013 to grant temporary protection to the names of your national societies; thus preventing such registrations at the second level for all new gTLDs. Such temporary protection will stay in place until an agreed permanent solution is in place."
and:
"I will update you on developments concerning the latter and the process and likely timescales involved".

Chinese registrants like .LOAN

Checking domain name registration volumes for the Real Estate industry, I noticed an increase of 179,933 new domain names within a one week period of time. For a registry...

THIS IS A LOT OF DOMAIN NAME REGISTRATIONS

...so I called Famous Four Media (dot Loan Limited), the Registry for the .LOAN new gTLD to ask the question and what was the reason of this. Here is the answer I received:
It has to do with the way .loan is perceived in China and it seems they are starting to love it. We have at least 2 big registrars in China that started selling insane numbers in .loan so that’s a fact now, no longer a guess.
Famous Four Media recently established a WFOE company (wholly foreign-owned enterprises) in China and obtained a government license to be able to sell its domain names. The Chinese market now seems to be part of any new gTLD development strategy to sell domain names.

Registration volumes tell a lot (new G's)

The .NIKON new gTLD seems to be doing tests again. When you compare with the .CANON domain name extension, it shows that chances are higher that there is a project of using .NIKON domains rather than with CANON. The .LONDON TLD has lost more than 1,000 registrations recently, same for the .AMSTERDAM extension. We are .BUSY this week

For a reason that I have a hard time to explain, the ".com" legacy Top-Level Domains is losing domain name registrations for the third week in a row. This does not happen often but "hey": new gTLDs are here.

I strongly suggest to subscribe to the new gTLDs Newsletter. The reason for this is that it is far easier for me to add information to it rather than posting to the new gTLD group on LinkedIn. The number of its subscribers has greatly increased these past weeks and I also have space available for new sponsors.

Which are the successful new gTLDs?

Shall we ever know the truth about what's really happened during round one of the ICANN new gTLD program: why some applicants just "dropped it", how much a registry really earns, which new gTLD is a real "hit" and which is not?

There is a pace where you ask your questions, and it is here. I recommend the reading of "Learnings from the last 3 Years".

Google is not selling any registry services

We initiated a discussion with the Google team in charge of developing this fantastic tool named Nomulus. Due to my poor English, I had to rephrase my question to make it understandable enough to receive an answer. And I received an answer.

The answer was straight: "Google is not selling any registry services".

We received the message and here is how we understand it at Jovenet Consulting:
  • Google is not selling any registry services "today" (I'll stop with this soon :-);
  • Google offers Nomulus because they want new backend registry service providers to host it on the Google Cloud Platform (this is the offer a we understand it today) and that is enough for Google;
  • Google does not want (yet?) to deal with questions such as: "hey Google, how can I create my domain name extension with you?" This is a very long question to answer and would require to follow-up with potential applicants. Unless we are wrong, Google does not do this and does not meet with such clients who would require meetings before investing so much money.
    Also, the new application process is unknown and we doubt that the ICANN will be able to provide, a strict timeline as when an application is submitted and when it is delegated: the kind of question a client wants to be answered before he pays;
  • Participating in "Round 1" of the ICANN new gTLD program has been a nightmare for many applicants, and "Round 2" should be far easier. Google does not yet see the potential of offering a key-in-hands solution to resellers of such an offer: Law firms, Registrars, future new gTLD applicants with a technical knowledge, new gTLD and domain name consultants, IT departments... Let's hope this changes.

Google answers questions about Nomulus

Nomulus is a backend registry tool made available by Google and for free. The Nomulus team kindly informed me about the place where to go for questions. I expect this discussion group to be able to answer technical questions but I believe it is going to be worth trying to ask questions on (a) potential coming offer(s).

Reminder: a backend registry is mandatory when it comes to applying for a new gTLD. The backend registry is the technical platform which manages daily operations related to the creation, renewal, registrars'payments, etc...for domain names. Nomulus comes as an alternative for coming .BRAND new gTLD applicants with few knowledge and Generic new gTLD applicants in round 2 of the ICANN new gTLD program.

Cool new gTLD NEWS following ICANN meeting

The latest GAC communiqué was published and seems more interesting to read - in terms of new gTLDs NEWS - than the latest Adopted Board Resolutions from the Regular Meeting of the ICANN Board which offers more "Thank you to" than resolutions

When I have a look at these documents, I often wonder if ICANN knows that real interested parties (from the real world) then need to decrypt these documents. I wish there was an understandable report for end users and a report for insiders where they could auto congratulate each other without polluting the interesting information. Find all links to these contents in tonight's newsletter.

Backend registries still needed in Round two?

Not fast enough today :-)
I wasn't fast enough today to ask my question during the Registry Service Provider Certification conference at ICANN 57 (Hyderabad). As a non native English writer, I need to write down my questions before posting them because it does not look nice when a question comes with a mistake or a mistype (and when it is read as such by the entire audience). Unfortunately, I could post it but far too late and from a potential dotBrand future new gTLD applicant prospective, it is to me a very important question so here it is:

Google recently revealed "Nomulus", a backend registry tool to operate a Registry. Since Google Registry (Charleston Road Registry Inc.) is already technically certified by the ICANN since it uses Nomulus for its TLDs; will future users of Nomulus need to become certified as backend registries too?

I understand that such question might not please backend registry providers, but since Nomulus is already in use and hosted on Google's technical platform (Google Cloud Platform); why would future new gTLD applicants have to deal with the technical aspect of running a registry when it could be just a matter of choosing a provider...just like when registering a domain name?

I emailed my question to the ICANN.

New domain name registration volumes
The .食品 (food in Japanese) new gTLD increased its number of registrations from 1 to 13 in one week (see the Catering new gTLD report). The .NIKON dotBrand new gTLD goes from 1 to 17 domain names registered since last week (see the Photography new gTLD report). In the City new gTLD report, the .BARCELONA has 2,100+ more registrations.

Next ICANN new gTLD Round: 2020 ?

There are discussions at ICANN on the subject at the moment and there will be more. A probably interesting one was the one from the GAC discussing the next steps following the ICANN bylaws changes. There should even be a more interesting one entitled "New gTLD Program Reviews" to take place this Saturday, November 5 between 13:45 and 14:45.

I downloaded the presentation and there is a slide - on page four - which tells a lot about what the date od "Round 2" might be. As usual, it is entitled "Program Reviews & Policy Timeline (Projected)", because no one, in the ICANN community, will ever take the risk to mention a date again :-)

It is important to know that a lot of interested parties in the new gTLD business want the second round of the ICANN new gTLD program to open as fast as possible but they are not the only ones: more and more Trademarks show signs that they want to submit an application too.
Some parties don't want of another round to happen for several reasons and one of them is that ".com has to remain kind". Another one is that...it takes time to install new domain names and flooding the market with even more domain name extension won't now help.

It also appears that the ICANN community wants Geographic domain name extensions and .BRAND new gTLD applicants to be able to submit an application as soon as possible. Unfortunately, it is not what the documentation says on page 4 of next Saturday's presentation because according to my understanding of this document, the earliest date that I read is not before 2020.

New gTLD acquisition for 1 million Euros

1 million Euros is the budget I was allocated for the acquisition of a new gTLD. After discussing with a certain number of applicants, it now seems clear that this is not enough. With the level of investment required to create a new gTLD, it is something I understand but I didn't speak to everyone.

I could not talk to all applicants so here is the pitch:
  • We look for an "as generic as possible" TLD;
  • We won't pay more than €1M;
  • We do not need to change backend registry;
  • Our intention is to deploy the TLD (increase the number of domain names registered);
  • We could also be interested in acquiring a .BRAND new gTLD.
So if you want to talk to us, contact Jovenet Consulting.
