3 .BRANDs were terminated but...

Some Brands
Some dotBrand new gTLD owners have not found what to do with their Top-Level Domains. For this reason - and also because it cost them $25,000 a year in ICANN taxes, they are withdrawing their application. The .BRAND TLD concerned are:

  1. .ADAC
  2. .LOFT (yes, this one is a dotBrand)
  3. .SES
Learn more here.

It it happens that some applications can be withdrawned, the total number of domain names created keeps increasing month after month (check down the Google sheet).

31 more ".brand" domains created in October 2022

According to the stats published since the beginning of Round 1 of the ICANN new gTLD program and whatever crap is written on Internet, personnalized domain name extensions (ending in ".brand" instead of ".com") continue to generate interest.

When checking the monthly statistics (down this table), not one single month reduces the number of .brand domain names created.

DotBrand Trademarks such as .ALLY - .AMAZON - .HYUNDAI - .LEXUS - .GENTING - .BAUHAUS - .JIO - .ABC - .TOYOTA - .LANXESS - .BRIDGESTONE - .GMO - .SEW - .TUI - .PHILIPS - .SNCF - .LIDL - .IFM - .CANON - .SKY - .SBI and many more contribute to this new trend.

More than 1,000 domains created

Three Trademarks have created more than 1.000 domain names for their own use: .DVAG - .AUDI and .LECLERC.

24 other Trademarks created betwenn 100 and 999 domains for their own use.

Google Registry to announce: .BOO & .RSVP new gTLDs

Two Top-Level Domains operated by Google Registry are awaiting their Sunrise Launch according to the Trademark Clearinghouse:
  1. .BOO new gTLD:
    1. SUNRISE PERIOD START: Tuesday, 4 October,
    2. SUNRISE PERIOD END: Monday, 7 November,
    3. CLAIMS NOTIFICATION PERIOD START: Tuesday, 8 November, 2022.

Google on .BOO (extracted from the application): "The proposed gTLD will provide the marketplace with direct association to the term, ʺboo.ʺ The mission of this gTLD, .boo, is to provide a dedicated domain space in which to enact creative second-level domains related to the term ʺboo.ʺ Charleston Road Registry believes that registrants will find value in associating with this gTLD, which could have a number of meanings and uses. Charleston Road Registry expects that these uses may include but are not limited to applications such as terms of endearment (hey.boo, youremy.boo)."

  2. .RSVP new gTLD:
    1. SUNRISE PERIOD START: Tuesday, 4 October,
    2. SUNRISE PERIOD END: Monday, 7 November,
    3. CLAIMS NOTIFICATION PERIOD START: Tuesday, 8 November, 2022

Google on .RSVP (extracted from the application): "The proposed gTLD will provide the marketplace with direct association to the term, ʺrsvp,ʺ which is an acronym of the French phrase ʺrépondez sʹil vous plaît,ʺ which translates to English as ʺplease reply.ʺ ʺRSVPʺ is commonly used as a verb to denote response to an invitation. The mission of the proposed gTLD, .rsvp, is to provide a dedicated domain space in which registrants can enact second-level domains that relate to physical or online events where a response is sought. This mission will enhance consumer choice by providing new availability in the second-level domain space, creating new layers of organization on the Internet, and signaling the kind of content available in the domain. Charleston Road Registry believes that registrants will find value in associating with this gTLD, as supported by the prevalence of events, birthdays, weddings, and other celebrations occurring around the world each day. Evite, one of the primary U.S. providers of online invitations, reports 219 million invitations are created by users annually, further substantiating the demand potential in the proposed gTLD [Source: http:⁄⁄new.evite.com⁄content⁄about_us]."

Fast note: I am French and I never used "RSVP" to say or write ʺrépondez sʹil vous plaîtʺ. This must be something from Canada (they also speak French there) ;-) Of course I am joking.

Backend Registry: I want you to build my next new gTLD offer

At Jovenet Consulting, we think that the next round of the ICANN new gTLD program will be quite something: we spent the past 10 years watching how existing new registries behave and we now quite know what upcoming applicants want: if some just don't know - like in was the case in the first round, some do.

Many lessons were learnt on applicants' expectations prior to the first round to start in 2012 but today's reality turns out to be different, numbers don't lie : only 6 registries on a list of more than 500 reached out to more than 1 million domain names. Is this where a future applicant wants to stand after 10 years of existence? This is a true question to have prior to submitting a new gTLD application to ICANN.

Combining efforts with a "Backend"

We already know what many upcoming applicants want to pay, we also know that they have high expectations. If submitting a dotBRAND application will be an easy procedure, creating a Registry to sell domain names will not be the same: does an applicant who enters the game want to renew 1.500 domain names each year? Probably not. What about 100,000 or one million? Sounds better doesn't it?

With that objective in mind, applicants will need to address the right partners and backend registry provider: some are already well prepared for dotBrand type of applications but "selling" domain names through the network of accredited registrars will require a studied strategy and a team.

Backend Registry required

Jovenet Consulting is confident that a company willing to invest thousands of dollars/euros in its new gTLD project will want a clear path to success. To do so, we - Jovenet Consulting, want to partner with a Backend Registry provider, not only to develop the best offer on the market but also to be able to offer that "key in hand" solution to our clients.

Our vision is to make it more simple for upcoming applicants to launch their Top-Level Domain. To do so, we want to partner with a Backend Registry provider for which we will sell the offer to our clients if we believe it is a good one. We want this to be a team's job and not a "do it all and send us your client". We are ready to sign a contract for this.

For interested backend registries, please contact us at Jovenet Consulting.

Why not join the new gTLD Group on LinkedIn?

The new gTLD group on LinkedIn is a group I started many years ago and on which I keep posting about new gTLDs (Top-Level Domains) and dotBrands, also called ".BRANDs".

I frankly admit that I am lazy posting on my blog and it is far more easy to post onto that group I moderate. The address is https://www.linkedin.com/groups/1840166/ and it required to be logged on LinkedIn.

There are now 2900 subscribers and I post quite often about what is important.

It is also where I announce new gTLD service providers ;-)

Round 2 of new gTLDs: what will it cost?

This is an extract of my latest Newsletter (you can subscribe here)

What is to be prepared prior to submitting your new gTLD application for the next Round of the ICANN new gTLD program?

This is a sum up of the offer I am building and which provides details on a number of things that future applicants should consider. This offer is based on the previous application round, which means that the pricing could change when the ICANN publishes its final version of the new Applicant Guidebook, and also when backend registry providers give more details about their new offer.
  1. CONSULTING: learn about new gTLDs and be explained costs, process, objections and mandatory service provider(s) involved in submitting a new gTLD application to the ICANN.
Price: it can vary according to the chosen service provider. Consulting comes free for one year with the New gTLD SWOT Analysis below. Most providers charge for this.
  2. NEW GTLD SWOT ANALYSIS: investigate why you want to create your generic, community, geographic or dotBrand new gTLD application:
    1. The objective:
      1. What do you want to do: focus on your brand, sell domain names to all or to a specific community, “own a monopoly”, represent a city and sell domain names ending in its name, create your dotBrand and rent its personalized domain names?
      2. What are the possible scenarios for your new gTLD application: these are scenarios on how your dotBrand (.BRAND) application could be used or if the application concerned is a community or geographic one: who could the targets be, and how are they approached.
Price: €2,850.00. Only Jovenet Consulting offers that option. This stydy helps prepare a project with an external eye: many lessons were learnt from the first round of the ICANN new gTLD program. It is now known “what works” and “what does not work”. The advantage of using Jovenet Consulting is its independence with no affiliation to any backend registry provider.
  3. WRITE OUT YOUR APPLICATION: once the project is validated internally and the ICANN has finalized the new gTLD Applicant Guidebook (“AGB”) for “Round 2”, it is time to prepare the ICANN form(s) so it is ready to enter the validation process. At this stage, external service providers such as the backend registry provider have been chosen in consultation with the future applicant. All providers have been selected and are mentioned in your application; they are part of your project and have a role in your project. For example, it is the backend registry provider who fills in the technical section of your application.
    Prices:
    1. Writing out the application (Jovenet Consulting): €20,000.00 (one shot).
    2. Backend Registry provider: $1.00 per year, up to $2.00 per domain name creation at the backend registry (requires to sign an agreement with the provider).
    3. ICANN Registry Fixed Fee: $25,000 per year ($6,250 per quarter).
    4. ICANN Registry-Level Transaction Fee: $0,25 per domain name per year when the total volume of domains created is below 50,000.
    5. Escrow service provider: to be determined (TBT) but up to $5,000 per year.
    6. Domain name abuse monitoring tool: TBT.
  4. SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION: the form is ready to be filled in the secured environment provided by the ICANN. At this stage, the applicant knows he is going to have to pay for submitting his application (reminder: in the first round of the ICANN new gTLD program, it cost $185.000,00). The procedure can be long and the sole objective is to be validated by the ICANN so the new top-level domain is “delegated”. At this stage, it becomes possible to create domain names.
In the case of an objection, a string contention, government comments, a Registry Services Review Fee, a Dispute Resolution Filing Fee, or a Community Priority Evaluation Fee; an external provider takes the lead and extra costs are added. During the validation process, such situations can occur.
    Prices:
    1. TAS (TLD Application System): $5,000.00 (deposit deducted from the application fee).
    2. Application fee: $185,000.00
  5. LAUNCHING YOUR REGISTRY: there are two ways to proceed:
    1. A .BRAND type of application: the .BRAND type can create domain names ASAP without a specific launching periods;
    2. A Registry dedicated to selling domain names: it has to organize its launching so registered trademarks can take advantage of registering domain names prior to the general public.
Note that all ICANN prices are based on the first Round one of the ICANN new gTLD program and are submitted to change change. Note that I don’t have a problem with other providers to take advantage of my publications ;-)

(no worry, I am used to have my contents copied ;-)
