New extension of the domain names: turmoil concerning .AMAZON !

Having been appointed by ICANN to represent the interest of the online community as regard to the delegation of new extensions, the IO could take charge of questions concerning public interest and the community’s objections when none objected to the application.

The famous online marketplace highlighted that there is a conflict of interest arising from the close ties between the IO and the government representing the Amazonian communities (Brazil and Peru) whereas he can act only on behalf of Internet users. Thus, his objection would only aim at formalising the objection of the governments. Alain Pellet denied the charges by affirming that the link simply results from a “normal average social life”.

My last email to the IO (the Independent Objector)

I just read most of the comments by the Independent Objector on controversial applications. My first thought is that the IO procedure is useless: "all this for that ?".

It is obvious we want more pornography for our children on Internet...

Now the guy seems to have done his job: he did complex analyses for some of the most commented applications and he wrote a lot. ICANN likes it when its service providers write a lot :-)

As for now there won't be any objection but this could change. In some of its comments he wrote: "this comment is still preliminary and does not prejudge the IO’s final decision to file an objection against the applications or not."

So I sent him this email:

Dear Sir,

Since your web site is available in English only, I guess I should be writing in English too.

I just read your comments on Controversial Applications and wonder if more are coming: I found the same sentence in some comments: "It is important to note that this comment is still preliminary and does not prejudge the IO’s final decision to file an objection against the application or not."

I have 2 questions:

1. Can you confirm you may still Object to some of the already listed new gTLD applications?
2. Could there be more comments coming on new applications on your web site?

26 October 2012: Big news! The official website of the ICANN Independent Objector is now online. Another piece of good news announced at the same time is that the site will also offer a French version, which was under construction at the time. More than a month later, the French version is still under construction

Reminder about the Independent Objector (IO)

Again, I would like to insist on how important his role is in the new gTLD program as he acts solely in the best interests of the public and can object to highly objectionable gTLD applications. I encourage readers of this blog to read about his role again on his web site:

If a public comment was submitted on the Limited Public Interest and/or the Community ground, the IO can submit an objection.

* I wonder who pays for Translations but if it is Icann and if it plans to have other languages translated, I have a very good address.

The new gTLD Independant Objector selected (IO)

As a reminder, the "IO" is acts solely in the interests of the public who use the global Internet.

The complete definition, mandate ans scope of the Independent Objector can be found in the last version of the Applicant Guidebook (the one I use is dated11 January 2012), page 156, point 3.2.5.

Basically, the IO is limited to filing two types of objections:

1. Limited Public Interest objections;
2. Community objections.

"The IO does not act on behalf of any particular persons or entities, but acts solely in the best interests of the public who use the global Internet."

His role:

The Independent Objector does not act on behalf of any particular persons or entities, but acts solely in the best interests of the public who use the global Internet.

As found in the latest Application Guidebook (3.2.5), he "will be selected by ICANN, through an open and transparent process, and retained as an independent consultant. The Independent Objector will be an individual with considerable experience and respect in the Internet community, unaffiliated with any gTLD applicant".

Questions:

• Only one Independent Objector for all applications?
• How is ICANN going to check if the IO is not funded, directly or indirectly, by an applicant? :-)
• Who is he?
