Impressive results of the .GDN Registry

I read many times that a high domain name registration volume is not a key to the success of a new gTLD. Well, I disagree: offering new domain names at a low price is a development strategy like another: it is an communication investment that pays. The .CLUB Registry has demonstrated that already with a strong investment budget in communication and a fair price for its domain name. The result now is that, not only it has become the reference for Clubs but clubs of all kinds...have turned to buying these domain names.

What about the .GDN Registry?
The strategy for the .GDN new gTLD seems to be a little different since there are still few Registrars to be accredited yet (with more coming little by little). This week, we noticed a change in registration volumes from the Registry with an important increase. Last week (on week 23), there were 29,259 domain names registered. This is not so bad for a Registry which launched with few Registrars accredited. This week (week 24), there are 65,795 domains registered.
Reminder about ".GDN" : it stands for "Global Domain Name", it is ultra cheap, it is a short Top-Level Domain with 3 letters and comes in direct competition with ".com" offering many free domains to register.

More new gTLDs were delegated

This has been a strange week working abroad in Iran. Just for the note, Google Apps for Work (the pro version of Gmail) and Twitter are blocked there. For this reason, it was difficult to update readers of this blog and Newsletter with Fresh news. I apologize for this and informed the Google support about this issue.
There was no new gTLD application submitted by Iran in the first Round of the ICANN new gTLD program but sanctions were raised in January 2016 so it now opens the door for this country to participate in the second Round. Jovenet Consulting is considering opening a bureau there but we will come back on this.

This week is a little special as we are establishing in the middle east for a short period of time...and no: we are not on holidays. During the next 4 days, publishing will take a little longer but we will ensure that new gTLD reports are updated everyday.

Behind the scene

We have selected this video because it shows "real life" in the story of a new domain name extension. It this video, it is clearly about strategy and numbers: different new gTLD business models are explained and an idea of amounts invested to make such an extension like ".club" successful are given. True story.

Noticeable last week:

1. .XYZ new gTLD: the Registry jumps from 2,888,839 domain names registered to 5,578,591. This is a lot but...there is a story behind.
2. .GDN new gTLD: this new Registry, which has more an more Registrars to take an accreditation, jumps from 17,806 domain names registered to 29,259. This is a good result too.
3. .PUB new gTLD: jumps from 53,132 to 63,817 domain names registered.

New gTLDs: "gamers decide"

I just noticed that the .GAMES new gTLD was just delegated: it means that there will soon be domain names ending in ".games" (with an "s"). You probably noticed that the .GAME new gTLD was launched a few weeks ago at a high price for Registrants: it cost more than $300 to register one of these domains.

It appears that the .GAMES will launch at a lower price - a much lower price - and if I would probably buy the singular version of a domain name and not the plural one, it is possible that gamers (those who play video games) decide to go for the plural version if it is cheaper. It is even possible that previous article written for the launching of .GAME does the promotion of a cheaper .GAMES...

These 2 new gTLDs are listed in the SPORT new gTLD report updated on Wednesday: we will keep a close eye on these 2 extensions and see...what gamers decide to buy.
