Did you read the .COMPANY new gTLD report?

The .COMPANY new gTLD report is pretty interesting this week. On the list of domain name extensions that we think companies should register their domain name (we included legacy TLDs in that list by the way), more of them are in the red: it means that they have less registrations than the week before. It is pretty hard not to see the progression of the .GDN new gTLD which passes from 83,264 domain names last week to 114,264 this week. We suggest readers to compare with last week.

French new Regions and new gTLDs (Round 2)

France has decided to change its regions' names (because it spends too much money with its mutiple administrations) and...it is happening right now: names are being confirmed. The French "Conseil d’État" will validate them in October 2016 but we already know which should be confirmed with a 90% chances.
It appears that "Languedoc-Roussillon" and "Midi-Pyrénées" will probably take the name of "Occitanie".
The reason why I am writing about this is that Round 2 of the ICANN new gTLD program is coming in 2019/2020 (according to my little finger). With all of these new names definitely validated in 2017, this leaves 2 to 4 years for French representatives to learn about new domain name extensions and check if it makes sense to create a new gTLD for these regions. If one of the reasons why the .AQUITAINE new gTLD was withdrawn is that the region of Aquitaine didn't know about this change coming.

".OCCITANIE" or ".OCC"?
Now these names will be voted by the end of 2016, I believe it is going to give ideas to many "new gTLD experts" to hunt for these new extensions with some advantages:
  1. Many lessons were learnt from Round one;
  2. New domain names are now more popular and there are existing examples such as ".alsace", ".corsica" and ".bzh";
  3.  The average price to apply is now known.

The era of propaganda (new gTLDs)

I just read the article below from Verisign and...no sign of new gTLDs in the article but I don't blame the author: business is business.
Since Verisign is the owner of the profitable .COM Registry, I understand that kind of promotion but what I misunderstand is the reference to SEO when Google announced that it makes no difference to use a new domain name or a ".com".
There is a reference to the frustrating technical experience with new gTLDs too: come on what are talking about here? Same for the "level of security" paragraph ending in: "It may be more prudent to stick with well-known and trusted domain name extensions until more of the new gTLDs are able to prove themselves as safe and reliable": what? (...) I am fine with auto-promotion and I understand Verisign's willing to do the promotion of ".com" at all costs but is it what I read here or is this propaganda?

My advice
  • Buy a new domain name (ie: ending in ".club" - ".gdn" - ".consulting" - ".finance"...) which means something and according to the identity of your online content. New gTLDs offer that possibility, ".com" domains don't.
  • Buy a ".com" domain name because there is a risk to have it cybersquatted.
  • When your baker says is bread is the best on earth, he's lying ;-)
