Numbers : the .AUTOS new gTLD

The .AUTOS new gTLD: from 82,000 domains in January 2025 to 205,000 in August 2025.

New domain name registration volumes

New gTLD reports are monthly domain name registration volumes' captures according to specific groups, businesses or industries.

On the last day of each month, we take a snapshot of these numbers so one can see if they increase or decrease for a month to the other.

This method is a good way to see if these domain names meet with adoption...or not.

New gTLDs : LOCAL = city names

I am probably sure that many noticed...that the first new gTLD applicant guidebook (and probably the upcoming one for the 2026 ICANN new gTLD Round) blocked interested applicants for submitting an application for the .LOCAL new generic Top-Level Domain.

It is the chosen one for innovative project "John Wolley" which focuses on city names but we have to take a different approach since this TLD is blocked.

Generic Names

We all know that one advantage to create a new domain name extension, a generic one, a dotBrand (or any other), is to benefit from the availability of "to be created" generic second level domains : domain names such as shoes.tld (".tld" is an example here), product.tld , mobile.tld or paris.tld

A real benefit

If the real SEO (Search Engine Optimization) benefit of using a generic name relies on what Google says, one think remains certain : the benefit of using a generic name is clear on a leaflet, a visit card, in the paper or online press. Reading a generic domain name is nicer and easier to comprehend than reading a descriptive domain name, and by the way : the shorter, the better.

City names and local visibility

Can generic city names such as "boston.tld" benefit for local content in search engine optimization? if - again - "Google decides", the benefit remains in the title : a word is a word and "boston" alone as the second level domain name says it all : a website with this generic domain name is probably going to be about the city of Boston. I asked that exact same question to an AI and this is the answer received :

"...notably Google, explicitly state that geoTLDs are treated like other generic TLDs (.com, .org) and do not provide any direct algorithmic ranking advantage for local searches based on the TLD itself. Keywords within the TLD also offer no direct SEO benefit. In contrast, country-code TLDs (ccTLDs) like .uk or .ca do serve as strong geographic signals for country-level targeting."

Scary, isn't?

Now, it also says this:

"Potential benefits of city TLDs like .boston are primarily indirect, stemming from branding and user perception. They can strongly signal local relevance, potentially enhancing user trust, reinforcing community connection, and possibly improving click-through rates (CTR) from local searchers who recognize the geographic identifier."

Much nicer.

Conclusion

Using city names as second level domains for local content makes sense in the next round of the ICANN new gTLD program. Industrializing such domain name creations using a .BRAND Top-Level Domain makes the project a cash machine if the minimum annual income per domain is $40. New gTLD reports: that's 12 months!

This is the last new gTLD report from 2023, for a total of 12 reports covering domain name registration volumes' captures according to specific groups, businesses or industries. These 12 new gTLD reports give an idea of how successful registries have been in 2023.

Of course, I keep hearing that "volumes don't matter" but come on: with no volumes, a Top-Level Domain just does not exist. Also: who would invest in a new gTLD project with that idea in mind?

Check all reports from 2023 at www.gtld.report and a happy new year to you!

New gTLDs offer more alternatives (and innovation)

I went skiing and saw the ad below, it is an ad for a Land Rover offered at a car dealer whose name is Donnay with several garages around Barcelona Spain. The ski resort I went to is an important with many Land Rovers exposed in the mountain so I checked if there was a ".donnay" new gTLD but found none. Anyway.

I love .LANROVER
Prints are often where we add a domain name to offer potential clients to visit a website but on this one, I find the URL used a little "old fashioned" compared to what could have been done with a domain name ending in ".barcelona" or even better: ".landrover". I checked the ".landrover" new gTLD application and read:
"The .landrover gTLD will provide an authoritative internet space for Land Rover, its affiliates and partners that are associated with the Land Rover brand. Second and third level domains can then be utilised for specific pages for Land Rover’s car models and dealerships, as well as for communication and marketing purposes, with internet users assured of brand authenticity".
Unless I am wrong, or completely stupid, isn't it precisely what the ".landrover" new gTLD was created and paid for: "to provide an authoritative internet space for Land Rover, its affiliates and partners that are associated with the Land Rover brand"?

Such great names could have been used: www.donnay.barcelona or www.donnay.landrover.

We're still far away
The .LANROVER new gTLD was delegated in October 2015, almost 3 years ago, but is it still not used appropriately. It is also possible that the people in charge of communication with affiliates and partners don't know about the existence of such tool.

I personally find that such an opportunity to demonstrate innovation in branding is a missed one in such a crowded place like a ski resort. This also clearly demonstrates that we are still far away from having communication specialists to innovate using their .BRAND new gTLD. This also happens with many other .BRAND Top-Level Domains at the moment.

For the note, three were 6,134 ".barcelona" domain names registered in February 2018 and 18 ending in ".landrover" in January 2018, down to 4 in February.

Land Rover: wake up ;-)

French students soon equipped with new domains

Some French business schools will soon equip their students with new domain names from the ICANN new gTLD program.

The idea is simple: have a email (or a website) that catches the eye of a recruiter on your résumé.

Article is available in French:
La majorité des étudiants ont déjà un email avant de commencer leurs études, c’est un email qu’ils garderont probablement...toute leur vie. Quand bien même leur employeur leur en fournira un pour travailler, des écoles de commerce prennent les devants pour préparer leurs étudiants en Finance à se différencier en abordant le marché du travail avec un email plus “pro”.

Confusing new gTLDs

Choosing the right domain name is like choosing a Trademark, it has to be taken seriously because it is a long time image investment.

If new gTLDs have brought new options to those in charge of creating a name (precision, availability, novelty) and registering its(their) domain name(s), they also brought the possibility to make a terrible mistake when choosing the right extension for a domain name.

First, I'd suggest to take a look at the list of "Singular versus Plural new gTLDs" and wonder:
  1. What if I someone else buys (and starts to use) my exact same domain name in its plural version?
  2. If I buy both domain names (one to use and one to redirect): what will be the trend in 5 years? Am I sure that I am making the right choice to use the plural version of the extension or should I use the singular one?
Second - and this one takes time - I'd suggest to carefully check the complete list of new gTLD applications by alphabetical order.

The same applies for Trademarks who will start to, or have started to, use their .BRAND new gTLD. Some strings can be the same with just one letter added. What happens if someone sends an email to Aigo Digital Technology Co,Ltd. (.AIGO new gTLD) and forgets the last "O"? The email could just never be received, because it was sent to a complete different company: American International Group, Inc. (owner of the .AIG new gTLD).

This is my list of confusing new gTLDs:
  1. .AIG & .AIGO
  2. .ART & .ARTE
  3. .AUDI & .AUDIBLE - .AUDI & .AUDIO
  4. Many more to come...
The complete list was first published on CircleId and will be maintained at Jovenet Consulting.

Chinese registrants like .LOAN

Checking domain name registration volumes for the Real Estate industry, I noticed an increase of 179,933 new domain names within a one week period of time. For a registry...

THIS IS A LOT OF DOMAIN NAME REGISTRATIONS

...so I called Famous Four Media (dot Loan Limited), the Registry for the .LOAN new gTLD to ask the question and what was the reason of this. Here is the answer I received:
It has to do with the way .loan is perceived in China and it seems they are starting to love it. We have at least 2 big registrars in China that started selling insane numbers in .loan so that’s a fact now, no longer a guess.
Famous Four Media recently established a WFOE company (wholly foreign-owned enterprises) in China and obtained a government license to be able to sell its domain names. The Chinese market now seems to be part of any new gTLD development strategy to sell domain names.

Hot today: .VOTE & .GAMES new gTLDs

.GAMES
Gamers seem to have noticed the launching of the .GAMES new gTLD. I checked domain name registration figures today and noticed that the Registry has already more than twice the number registrations than the singular version of the extension: the .GAME new gTLD. The price difference probably explains this.

.VOTE
There is an advertising campaign that has just launched to encourage American voters "to do their duty". The Iron Man is on front page and I am confident that such initiatives will help new gTLDs grow faster. I believe it is important to add that "vote" is a French word too and I would appreciate if someone could pass the word to @axellelemaire. The campaign: http://savetheday.vote/

  • SINGULAR vs PLURAL new gTLDs;

This coming new gTLD in which I believe A LOT

Some Top-Level Domains are a success and this is noticeable by the number of domain name registered, no matter if some registries cheat a little. When the volume of domain name registered is not constant but keeps increasing, it is a sign that Registrants pay interest.

Companies
Companies are concerned by new generic Top-Level Domains and it is a subject that should be followed, not only because of the existing risk of infringement(s), but because it makes sense to use a descriptive domain name extension: when buying wine, you search for a sign that says "wine", not "buy"nor "shop" "commercial".

In the COMPANIES new gTLD report, I publish the list of new domain name extensions companies should consider registering their domain name with. For the obvious reason of budget limitation, all cannot be purchased but this is a short list extracted from the complete list of 1,179 delegated new gTLDs.

The .CONTACT new gTLD
The CONTACT new gTLD will hopefully launch before 2017. At the moment, the TLD is delegated and one domain name has been created. I am not sure it makes sense explaining why registering the domain name of a company in ".contact" is important so let's focus on what the Registry says about his extension: "A platform for hosting contact sites". If this sentence looks like the .TEL concept (you can check http://registries.tel/ as an example): a similar platform for all new domain name registered; another sentence says: "Conversations have never been so easy". One could be a place to store contacts and the other could be a chat platform.

Shall I have all my contacts stored at a third party application or provider with the risk of losing my address book if I forget to renew my domain name: definitely not or at least, I will be very careful with the security and backup aspect of such service. Will I want to pay for this? Not sure.

Whether this new gTLD will be a place to store contacts, chat or just "do other stuff", I am really excited about its launching. I also hope to find innovation: some sort of form service so people can write then the message is sent to an email? The potential is so high behind this multilingual TLD that, no matter what it offers, It is definitely domain names that I will recommend registering.

New domain name registration volumes:
  • HOT - New gTLDs related to COMPANIES;
  • New gTLDs related to the LAW;
  • New gTLDs related to the COLORS;
  • New gTLDs related to FINANCE.

Today is ".RIP" Nice

For the second time recently, France is facing another terrorist attack. Today is a sad day and all my thoughts go to these families in Nice whose kids were murdered. I strongly believe that one of the reasons why France is hit so hard is because our Government is so slow at taking the right decisions: our forces are not even allowed to react when they are thrown rocks at during demonstrations. French are seriously pissed by this situation.

An offer received for a new domain name?

Just like many people involved in new gTLDs or domain names, I put domain names on sale: sometimes to learn about selling platforms and sometimes to try to sell get rid of a domain name. To be honest...I never receive offers and the reason for this might because the domains that I sell are of no interest. Recently, I bought 2 ultra generic domain names in complete unknown domain name extensions: both have less then 4,000 registrations. The reason why I am writing about this is that I just received an offer for one of them and checking the stats of the other...there is incoming traffic to the page where it is offered: something that I rarely saw before. Is this the solution to sell domain names on Internet?

The era of propaganda (new gTLDs)

I just read the article below from Verisign and...no sign of new gTLDs in the article but I don't blame the author: business is business.
Since Verisign is the owner of the profitable .COM Registry, I understand that kind of promotion but what I misunderstand is the reference to SEO when Google announced that it makes no difference to use a new domain name or a ".com".
There is a reference to the frustrating technical experience with new gTLDs too: come on what are talking about here? Same for the "level of security" paragraph ending in: "It may be more prudent to stick with well-known and trusted domain name extensions until more of the new gTLDs are able to prove themselves as safe and reliable": what? (...) I am fine with auto-promotion and I understand Verisign's willing to do the promotion of ".com" at all costs but is it what I read here or is this propaganda?

My advice
  • Buy a new domain name (ie: ending in ".club" - ".gdn" - ".consulting" - ".finance"...) which means something and according to the identity of your online content. New gTLDs offer that possibility, ".com" domains don't.
  • Buy a ".com" domain name because there is a risk to have it cybersquatted.
  • When your baker says is bread is the best on earth, he's lying ;-)
