The .HOW new gTLD

Google is offering the .HOW new gTLD. According to the number of results indexed - 1,180,000 from where I am and the 2,495 domains registered - there is something going on.

Have a look here for indexed URLs ending in ".how".

Here is what the .HOW new gTLD applications says:
The proposed gTLD will provide the marketplace with direct association to the term, ʺhow.ʺ The mission of this gTLD, .how, is to provide a dedicated domain space in which registrants can enact second-level domains that position content relating to ʺin what manner or wayʺ one executes a task, as in ʺhow to do ʹsomething.ʹʺ Charleston Road Registry believes that registrants will find value in associating with this gTLD, which could have a vast array of purposes for enterprises, small businesses, groups or individuals seeking to associate with the term ʺhowʺ.

New gTLDs...since last Tuesday

COMING ARTICLES
I am working on two articles based on "facts" and I should post them soon. Your participation is welcome and I am happy if you drop me a line with your participation. The articles will probably be entitled:
  1. "Confusing new gTLDs";
  2. New business model for Round 2 (a new business model for Round two of the ICANN new gTLD program).
NEW gTLD PROJECT
I developed a project which innovation is based on a new domain name extension. It focuses on:
  • Generating income and creating new sources of revenues;
  • Establishing a worldwide "mega" brand;
  • Giving worldwide visibility to  project owner;
  • Bringing strong innovation to the Internet.
Since I cannot finance such a project, I am happy to talk to interested parties. Note that the project can be adapted to an existing - but not yet developed - new gTLD. I'd love to talk to Amazon, to Google, to Automattic, to Facebook, Vistaprint...

MILESTONE
The new gTLD group on LinkedIn has passed the 2,500 subscribers. As usual, you are welcome to post your news to the group as long as they are related to new gTLDs. We also send an announcement on Monday to subscribers so if you want to be read...this is the place have you content posted.

The .AUDI new gTLD
The AUDI Trademark creates more ".audi" domain names (see figures here). The registry has now up to 552 registrations and these start to be indexed in Google. There is an interesting https://gofor2025.audi/ that has been indexed recently. More to come?

.GDN : removed
The Top-Level Domain was removed from the Generic new gTLD report since the mission/purpose of the application still states: "Our mission is to commence a new generic top level domain name avenue for global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) industry and users, that enables and improve for commercial entities to illustrate, manage, market their products, services, education and experience, which enhance visibility and makes it easy for users to recognize GNSS activity on internet." What is written in the application is absolutely not what the front page of the registry says.

We are .BUSY this week

For a reason that I have a hard time to explain, the ".com" legacy Top-Level Domains is losing domain name registrations for the third week in a row. This does not happen often but "hey": new gTLDs are here.

I strongly suggest to subscribe to the new gTLDs Newsletter. The reason for this is that it is far easier for me to add information to it rather than posting to the new gTLD group on LinkedIn. China starts to pay interest in legacy .TEL gTLD

China is the new eldorado for Registries and a reason of this is very simple: people from the Republic of China buy more and more domain names. For Registries, this is a market where it is important to have a presence. Recently, many Registries and back-end Registries participated in conferences in China to introduce themselves: the closer to the buyer...the better.
Note that this post is not about what Chinese do with their domain names (use, park, spam, squat, resell) but about the fact that it is important for Registries and Back-ends to sell domain names:
  1. To install them on the market: the more domains the greater visibility;
  2. Profitability: many domains, once bought, are renewed once a year.
At some point in its history, the .TEL Registry had 325,000 registrations. The .TEL registration volumes dropped below 100,000 in July 2016. In August 2016 they reached 96,611 domain name registrations. Then, they suddenly started to increase again progressively and reach the 103,000 registrations.

It appears that a Chinese template was recently created for the concept of .TEL domains and that could be an explanation.

Hot today: .VOTE & .GAMES new gTLDs

.GAMES
Gamers seem to have noticed the launching of the .GAMES new gTLD. I checked domain name registration figures today and noticed that the Registry has already more than twice the number registrations than the singular version of the extension: the .GAME new gTLD. The price difference probably explains this.

.VOTE
There is an advertising campaign that has just launched to encourage American voters "to do their duty". The Iron Man is on front page and I am confident that such initiatives will help new gTLDs grow faster. I believe it is important to add that "vote" is a French word too and I would appreciate if someone could pass the word to @axellelemaire. The campaign: http://savetheday.vote/

New domain name registration volumes:
  • New gTLDs related to SPORT (updated yesterday);
  • New gTLDs related to ALCOHOL (updated yesterday);
  • New gTLDs related to REAL ESTATE (updated yesterday);
  • SINGULAR vs PLURAL new gTLDs;
  • FRENCH new gTLD applications;
  • New gTLDs related to RELIGION.

This coming new gTLD in which I believe A LOT

Some Top-Level Domains are a success and this is noticeable by the number of domain name registered, no matter if some registries cheat a little. When the volume of domain name registered is not constant but keeps increasing, it is a sign that Registrants pay interest.

Companies
Companies are concerned by new generic Top-Level Domains and it is a subject that should be followed, not only because of the existing risk of infringement(s), but because it makes sense to use a descriptive domain name extension: when buying wine, you search for a sign that says "wine", not "buy"nor "shop" "commercial".

In the COMPANIES new gTLD report, I publish the list of new domain name extensions companies should consider registering their domain name with. For the obvious reason of budget limitation, all cannot be purchased but this is a short list extracted from the complete list of 1,179 delegated new gTLDs.

The .CONTACT new gTLD
The CONTACT new gTLD will hopefully launch before 2017. At the moment, the TLD is delegated and one domain name has been created. I am not sure it makes sense explaining why registering the domain name of a company in ".contact" is important so let's focus on what the Registry says about his extension: "A platform for hosting contact sites". If this sentence looks like the .TEL concept (you can check http://registries.tel/ as an example): a similar platform for all new domain name registered; another sentence says: "Conversations have never been so easy". One could be a place to store contacts and the other could be a chat platform.

Shall I have all my contacts stored at a third party application or provider with the risk of losing my address book if I forget to renew my domain name: definitely not or at least, I will be very careful with the security and backup aspect of such service. Will I want to pay for this? Not sure.

Whether this new gTLD will be a place to store contacts, chat or just "do other stuff", I am really excited about its launching. I also hope to find innovation: some sort of form service so people can write then the message is sent to an email? The potential is so high behind this multilingual TLD that, no matter what it offers, It is definitely domain names that I will recommend registering.

New domain name registration volumes:
  • HOT - New gTLDs related to COMPANIES;
  • New gTLDs related to the LAW;
  • New gTLDs related to the COLORS;
  • New gTLDs related to FINANCE.

.BLOG domain names are coming

Nominet, a new gTLD Registry services provider, is now indexed in Google and listed using a .BLOG domain name for its blog. Nominet has a certain number of new gTLDs under management and offer registry services for major strings such as .LONDON - .SURF - .BEER  - .WALES and... .BLOG.

New domain name registration volumes:
In the report can be noticed the slight increase of ".moi" domain name registrations. I went to to the .MOI Registry webpage and liked, as a French native, the explanation for the use a ".moi" domain name: "Un nom de domaine pour les particuliers et les entreprises pour célébrer la langue française en tant qu’élément rassembleur."
But did you read what comes next? I sent an email to their support :-)

Is the ".com" old gTLD losing appeal?

This week, the GENERIC new gTLD report - a report focusing on challengers of the ".com" domain name extension, shows that there are less ".com" registrations than the week before: it also means that the ".com" Registry is losing registrations. The new gTLD info for Thursday, April 28th

I sometimes receive nice messages, here is one I received this morning from RightSide. These messages come more often I noticed and they coincide with the increasing number of subscribers to the gTLD.club Newlsetter. I am more than happy to see that new gTLDs start to interest the general public. Below is the message I received from George:
I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your gtld.club blog, which I try to read every day. I'm relatively new to the industry (going on three years now) and I have to credit your blog with helping me to build a foundation and expand my understanding in the area that interests me the most -- raising public awareness of and sparking imaginative interest in new gTLDs through creative communications campaigns and good storytelling.
